During 2005 New Zealand hosted 29,000 British and Irish Lions rugby fans and what a pleasure it was to meet such a great bunch of good humoured and enthusiastic sports fans, even though they nearly drank our pubs dry!  Following this success, New Zealand has won the right to host the 2011 Rugby World Cup and one of our goals is to play our part in transporting the fans through New Zealand by steam train!

GREAT NEWS!

STEAM CAVALCADE PLANNED FOR DUNEDIN STATION 100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS:

In addition to our summer steam journey programme we have added a very special one off steam excursion to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the completion of the iconic Dunedin Railway Station. The excursion is timed to arrive at Dunedin in time for the unique STEAM CAVALCADE planned for the long weekend of October 21-23 2006.

This will be the New Zealand railway event of the decade.

Details of the weekend’s events and the steam cavalcade are at www.dunedinstation.co.nz

Full Details of our steam journey and itinerary are at: www.greatnzsteamjourneys.co.nz/dunedinstation100th (PDF Document)

Our steam journey includes visits to all the main venues of railway and sightseeing interest in the South Island.

Summer 2007:

Dates for the Summer 2007 Programme are now confirmed and on the website.

Even if you are not a railfan here are just some of the things you will do on one of our summer steam journeys:

You will visit wineries, experience Maori culture, have some awesome wildlife experiences and see some of the most spectacular scenery found anywhere in the world.

In Auckland, the City Of Sails, you are surrounded by 50 dormant volcanoes and can sail out to see Rangitoto, the largest volcano in the Harbour, which last erupted only 500 years ago. You can even go inside the volcano crater at Mt Eden and if you are feeling adventurous you can bungy jump off the Sky Tower, the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest building.

Further south you can explore the limestone caves of Waitomo or meet live Kiwis before travelling up Lord of the Rings “Mt Doom” in the Tongariro National Park

As you reach the southern tip of the North Island you will visit one of the most beautiful capital cities, Wellington, and can explore one of the world’s most interesting and innovative national museums: Te Papa.

In the South Island you will see seals, dolphins, penguins, albatrosses and experience the fascinating and challenging Antarctic environment at The International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch before heading to the “Scottish” city of Dunedin and the desert landscape of Central Otago.

Once there you will follow the prospectors to the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown and to Arrowtown, where you can still pan for gold.

Finally you will travel through Fiordland to the scenic climax of your journey at Milford Sound.

You can get the real taste and feel of our steam journeys by viewing our 4 minute video summary online.

OR if you would like to see the full 60 minute DVD or Video on your own TV then we can send you a copy straightaway:  This version takes you on the full New Zealand Steam Explorer journey right through New Zealand. See magnificent shots of our steam locos in full cry through some of New Zealand’s finest scenery.  It also profiles the major groups restoring these powerful machines and includes the latest Tourism New Zealand promotional video to really whet your appetite for what you will see on your trip through New Zealand!

Whether it is whales to wineries, volcanoes to viaducts, caves to kiwis or just the stunning scenery, it is well worth ordering. A small charge of NZ$20 is made to cover copying, postage and packing for the full 60 minute version.

If you would like to order a copy of the DVD just email: paul.hashfield@greatnzsteamjourneys.co.nz

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a selection of the most commonly asked questions we have encountered over the last 6 months:

Why haven’t these New Zealand steam journeys been offered before?

Previously the New Zealand rail infrastructure was owned and controlled by a freight company which gave priority to freight trains and did not encourage heritage passenger operations. The New Zealand government bought back the rail infrastructure in 2004 and a specific Heritage Rail Operators Agreement to use the rail network was signed meaning we can now travel on lines normally carrying just freight. The New Zealand government is keen to encourage new tourist initiatives and as our operation develops we intend to open up more lines for visitors to experience.

Is this journey aimed mainly at railfans?

No and Yes! The itinerary is designed for our visitors to experience all the best scenery and sights that New Zealand has to offer. This means that the non railfans have a fully guided tour of ALL the major attractions en route and do not have to participate in any “railfan” events at all if they don’t want to. However there are “railfan excursions” offered right through the journey where all the rail museums and preserved railway lines can be visited. This means you can choose just how much or how little of each you see as we travel through the country.

Can I get off and on along the way?

Our trains run North to South once a month in summer. This means you may be able to get off and join the next one in a month’s time if you wish. It is possible to “leapfrog” the journey you are travelling on though we do not recommend this, as you will miss so much!

Are all excursions included?

If you check out the “Excursion Points” page on the website you will see that most of the excursions are already included although you do have the option of purchasing more points if you want to.   For example, if you use your points to say take a once in a lifetime scenic helicopter trip you may use up more points but it is always your choice on how to spend them.  Many of our visitors will find they see everything they want to within the number of points allocated.

Will we get sick of being on a train all day?

The longest time spent on the train is 3 hours at any one time before we break for an excursion or arrive at that day’s destination. You can get up and walk around and talk to fellow travellers along the way or enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack in the buffet car.  As “train” days often alternate with city excursion days you are highly unlikely to get sick of train travel.

Do we have to load our luggage on and off the train every day?

NO   All luggage is taken from hotel to hotel by coach.  This means you can rest and relax, as you do not have to carry your luggage on to the train at all.   Take with you only what you need for the day – camera and sun block etc.

Is the airfare included?

No. Most people get better fares and more flexibility by shopping around locally so we believe that is the best option for most of our customers. Don’t forget we end our journey at either Wellington in the North Island or Queenstown in the South Island so you may need to make your own travel arrangements from there to your New Zealand departure airport.

RAILFANS CORNER

This section is for those people who are dedicated Railfans. 5 reasons why Railfans will enjoy our New Zealand Steam Journeys:

1) We'll be seeing a wide variety of steam, diesel and electric locomotives: There are few places in the world where you will see such variety of influences on locomotive development. You'll see early steam locos imported from Great Britain including the unique Double-Fairlie: Josephine. You'll see locos from the USA including the magnificent Rogers 4-4-0's and finally you'll see many New Zealand designed and built locomotives such as the Ab Pacific's, Ja's and Ka's. In addition to mainline locomotives you'll see many examples of local industrial tanks and in particular the fascinating bush tramway logging locos such as the Price's and a Climax. Diesel and Electric fans will not be disappointed as the itinerary covers all the current mainline action as well as the major museums.

2) We'll be travelling on some of the most spectacular routes in the country: New Zealand is a mountainous country with steep gradients, sharp curves, spectacular gorges and some breathtaking coastline. The 3'6" gauge conquered this terrain with numerous tunnels and some truly magnificent viaducts. Much of the best scenery is on lines closed to passengers, miles away from the nearest roads and our private steam train means you will among the few people able to enjoy that scenery. To help you keep that memory we have arranged plenty of photostops and runpasts along the routes for you.

3) We believe your partner will enjoy this journey just as much as you: We love trains and could happily spend all our holidays on them, but we also love our partners and want them to enjoy the journey just as much as us. We want to share the enjoyment with them, so to make sure of that we always have a good choice of other things to do when the railfan excursions are on. Check out the Excursion Points pages and you'll see what we mean.

4) We know that the journey will be full of pleasant surprises for you: Have you come back from holiday and found the things you remember most were the unexpected things? We know that will also be the case with this journey..but if we let slip what they are, they wouldn't be surprises! So you'll just have to take our word for it and come experience them for yourself!

5) We know it's a long way to travel, so we make sure you get to see the best railway venues you can in your limited time: All New Zealand's preserved railways are run by volunteers and operate on weekends or sometimes only once a month. This means if you did the journey by yourself you'd need several months to travel on them all. On our steam journey they will be opening specially for us and are giving our group special treatment for photo opportunities and running special trains etc. You can be sure that the red carpet will be out for you and that all the railways will be putting their best faces forward on the day!
